Live exports are not sustainable in the long term

Live export has again been a hot topic in the news over the last few days, with shocking cruelty to Australian cattle in Egypt revealed by Animals Australia.  The government has come out again in support of the trade but I believe this is not only bad for animals, but potentially a terrible strategy for farmers in the long term as well. I’ve seen in the news that there has been a couple of “crisis” meetings held around Australia with … Continued

Cattle brutally slaughtered in Egypt is unacceptable

Australia sits back and watches on as its animals are subject to the worst kind of cruelty and abuse. Animals are suffering a long and painful death, their heads partially severed. All of this despite a more humane and economically beneficial alternative existing. What kind of country does that make us? The footage we saw on ABC’s 7.30 programme is shocking and appalling; it’s something that no-one wants to see. Seven in ten Australians believe that live export should be … Continued

Cruelty to cattle in Israel – Help us reach 200,000 signatures

We are shocked but not surprised by the latest footage of cruelty to Australian animals in Israel. It is clear that whilst live export continues, so will the intolerable cruelty. To watch ABC’s 7.30 program, click here – but be warned of graphic footage. The animals were beaten, poked in the eyes, prodded with an electrical prodder and one animal was even dragged by a forklift. There is a high level of risk associated with sending animals overseas as we … Continued

A visual representation of the alternatives to live export

Live animal export can seem to be a very complicated and controversial issue. The solutions aren’t always clear. So we have been looking at ways we can benefit farmers and the economy and help animals involved in the live trade as well. We could write lengthy documents or fact sheets to explain but we thought the best way to illustrate the alternatives was via a concise and engaging video. A video that would not show any horrific footage but explain in an … Continued

We are united in supporting the alternatives to live exports!

The horrific treatment of Australian animals, as shown on Four Corners a few weeks ago, makes it evident that the Government system in place is flawed and there is no control over how our animals will be treated once they reach their destination. We have been talking to government for several years about the viable alternatives to live export – alternatives that protect jobs, the economy and most importantly, Australian animals. We aren’t the only ones asking the Government to … Continued

There is a better option than live export!

We are all shocked by tonight’s Four Corners story which exposed the horrendous treatment of Australian sheep in Pakistan. Footage of sheep being slashed, stabbed and buried alive demonstrates that we have absolutely no control when it comes to protecting our animals in importing countries. Once the sheep leave our shores, this kind of cruelty can happen without the Australian government having the official power to intervene. These animals had already been on a boat for an extended period of … Continued

New community launched to protect animals!!

We know a lot of you have signed a petition or written to your MP in response to the cruel live export trade. We know that many of you want to do more. We also know that government responds to numbers. In particular, MPs respond to numbers within their electorate.  We have already had over 179,000 people join the chain. Imagine what we could achieve if all of those people just got 5 more people to take action! So we … Continued

New WSPA report: live export solution to benefit Australian jobs, farmers and animals

WSPA has come up with a solution to the live export issue – one that will not only protect the welfare of hundreds of thousands of animals each year but will see a more stable future for Northern Australia cattle farmers. We know that an animal welfare group proposing a cattle-processing facility is a new, revolutionary approach. But we 100% believe that our solution is the most realistic, most animal-friendly way that the live export issue can be quickly resolved. … Continued

Eight economic reasons why live exports are unsustainable

The last few weeks have revealed several live export tragedies that once again cement the fact that live exports are inherently cruel to animals. Not only is this trade cruel but we have highlighted eight economic reasons as to why it is unsustainable for Australia and our farmers. We only export to a few markets: Live exporters don’t have many major markets that they export to. In 2010 almost 90 percent of exported sheep went to the Middle East. About … Continued
