FREMANTLE EVENT ATTRACTS A HUGE CROWD IN SUPPORT OF AN END TO LIVE EXPORTS

Thousands of Australians Rally Against Live Animal Exports

WA Labor Party recognises the need to phase out live animal exports

On the 25th June 2011, the WA Labor Party passed a motion that will have significant long term benefits for Australian jobs in rural and regional areas and for animal welfare. The motion, proposed by Member for Maylands, Lisa Baker said that there are strong economic, job and animal welfare reasons for transitioning from the live export trade to domestic processing of animals for local consumption and the chilled and frozen meat trade. Last week, Prime Minister Julia Gillard attended a Community Cabinet meeting at South Fremantle High School. Given Fremantle’s role in live sheep exports, a number of community members attended to show their support for ending the cruel trade. Public Hearing to Investigate Live Export Petition

On Wednesday 10th November at 10.15am, a public hearing will be held by the Environment and Public Affairs Committee into a petition tabled by People Against Cruelty in Animal Transport (now called Stop Live Exports). The petition asks that the Legislative Council investigates the trade with a view to recommending a timeframe within which it can be permanently discontinued.
